ABOUT THE NATIONAL CACHE

The Rocky Mountain Area Support Fire Cache (RMK) hosts the National Incident Smoke Monitor Support Cache (NISMSC). NISMSC has the following items available for deployment to wildfire and prescribed burn incidents:

E-Sampler Kit Wildfire Version NFES # 5840

E-BAM Kit Wildfire Version NFES # 5841

E-BAM Kit V1 (old) NFES # 5856

Flow Meter Swift 25 (for E-BAM) NFES # 9729

Flow Meter Swift 6 (for E-Sampler) NFES # 5852

RAD-57 CO-Oximeter Sensor Kit NFES # 8769

CO Sensor Kit (2 Lascar Pens) NFES # 8768

solar panels NFES # 5843

Purple Air Sensors: Outdoor NFES # 5853, Indoor NFES # 5854

Carbon Monoxide sensors (for Wildfire units) NFES # 5832

DeltaCal / TetraCal NFES # 5851

Accessory Kits (Multi-meter, etc) NFES # 5839

There is only one type of E-Sampler and there are two types of E-BAM's: Standard and Wildfire (WF). The NFES numbers for ordering are the same for standard and WF versions and so you will need to specify which type of unit you want in the text of the general message. You will also need to order a flow calibrator when you order an E-Sampler or E-BAM. (See example general message). The WF versions are newer and have Carbon Monoxide sensors that will be included.

When ordering an E-BAM you will need to include the approximate elevation of the expected deployment. The standard E-BAM units can only perform up to 4000 feet. Any deployment above 4000 feet will require a Wildfire E-BAM.

Prior to ordering an EBAM, please contact usfs.smoke.monitors@gmail.com or smokeprogramcache@gmail.com or Smoke Hotline at (303-736-9246)

Smoke Monitor Kits should be requested through a General Message as a Supply request through Dispatch. Dispatch should place the order directly to RMK and not placed up to a local GACC or NICC. A physical shipping address which includes a street name and number, city, state, and zip code is required. A receiving incident phone number should be included on the resource order. A valid US Forest Service charge (job) code must be provided. After your order has been submitted, contact RMK at 303-202-4940 to confirm that the smoke monitoring kit request was received successfully.

PDF Example General Message

To order monitors, fill out a general message (example left). Include the number of monitors and the type (E-Sampler or EBAM standard or wildfire), the NFES #, the location to be shipped, if ordering an E-BAM include the elevation of deployment site, and any other pertinent information. Have your unit lead/supervisor sign off on the message (typically Planning Unit Lead but may be different depending on fire assignment). Send the general message (physically or electronically) to ordering.

Note, during peak fire season, ordering is stretched, and most areas are under expanded dispatch. General guidance is to wait a few hours, check in with ordering to see if it has been processed.  Once processed, call RMK to see if they have received the order.  If they have not, there is likely a hold up in dispatch/expanded dispatch. RMK can track down the order by calling expanded dispatch if they have your contact information and the fire. While the Cache may have the monitors ready to be sent out, they cannot leave the Cache until a resource order has been received by dispatch.

COSTS TO REQUESTING UNIT

The requesting unit is expected to pay for shipping costs, typically UPS Overnight Air unless other arrangements are made. Normal maintenance costs (done between deployments) are not currently charged to the requesting unit.

Any costs due to damage or loss are expected to be paid by the requesting unit as they occur. Total kit replacement cost is approximately $14,600.

SHIPPING

Subject to kit availability, weekday orders processed by 1400 MT will be shipped that afternoon Next Day Air. If a weekend delivery is requested, make certain that UPS delivers to that location on the weekend. Weekend orders processed prior to 1100 MT on Saturday can be expected to arrive on Monday, while anything afterwards may not be received until Tuesday. In certain circumstances, arrangements can be made for expedited shipping after these general cut-off times. Contact RMK at 303-736-9246 if this is necessary.

All smoke monitoring kits should be returned immediately to RMK after each assignment for refurbishment. Smoke monitoring kits should not be reassigned unless pre-approved by calling 303-736-9246.

The incident or unit charged with custody of the smoke monitor kit is responsible for a complete inventory of that equipment upon return from the incident. NISMSC kits should be packed properly in their shipping cases and returned promptly to RMK. Do not stockpile kits. Incidents are responsible for ensuring all smoke monitor kits are returned or accounted for on a Property Loss Statement.

Return the Kit via Overnight Air to:

Rocky Mountain Interagency Support Cache

Denver Federal Center, BLDG 810, Door N27

Lakewood, CO 80225
